City of Manila
The City of Manila is the capital of the Philippines and the second largest city by population, just after Quezon City. It is one of the oldest cities in the Philippines and was the seat of power for most of the country's colonial rulers. It is situated on the eastern shore of Manila Bay and is home to many landmarks, some of which date back to the 16th century. Manila is also the most densely populated city proper in the world, with 41,515 people per square kilometer.
Around 60,000 establishments operates in the city, making the city of Manila a major center for commerce, banking and finance, retailing, transportation, tourism, real estate, new media as well as traditional media, advertising, legal services, accounting, insurance, theater, fashion, and the arts in the country. The Port of Manila is the largest seaport in the Philippines, making it the premier international shipping gateway to the country.
Binondo, the oldest and one of the largest Chinatowns in the world, is slowly regaining its former claim as the center of commerce and business activities, with the new infrastructure in the city. Plans to make the Chinatown area into a business process outsourcing (BPO) hub progresses and is aggressively pursued by the city government of Manila. Numerous residential and office skyscrapers are found within its medieval streets. 30 buildings, which are mainly in Escolta, are already identified to be converted into BPO and commercial offices
The city of Manila remains to be a formidable political hub, thanks to the various government institutions situated in the city. Manila also serves as the headquarters of the Central Bank of the Philippines.
Tourism is a vital industry in Manila, and it welcomes approximately over 1 million tourists each year to its most popular attractions: the walled city of Intramuros, the Tanghalang Pambansa at the Cultural Center of the Philippines Complex, Manila Ocean Park, Binondo, Ermita, Malate, Manila Zoo, the National Museum of Fine Arts and Rizal Park.
